I just stumbled upon a video on YouTube that really hit home. The crux of the message was, no one is coming to push you to do the things you need to do in order to become the person you want to become.
It really hit home because it's something I've touched upon in many articles. It's a harsh truth for some, but it's necessary to share because no matter how harsh it is, it's still the truth.
And that is that you'll never feel like doing what you need to do in order to become the person you're destined to become, or achieve the things you dream about.
Think about it. The whole job of a parent is to get their kids to do things that the kids don't feel like doing, but should do anyway. If it were up to kids to decide what they did, they'd watch tv all day, only eat junk, and probably end up getting into more and more trouble as they grow up.
So it's a parent's job to discipline kids and get them to do the things they need to do - go to school, brush their teeth, be polite, etc - in order to function as decent members of society, and to prepare them for the real world.
What is the real world?
The real world is when kids no longer live with their parents. That is, when parents no longer have influence over their kids, and it's up to the kids to figure things out.
Now we suddenly go from being told what to do all our lives to being in control. Where most people get stuck is they only do what their feelings tell them to do. They don't do things because they don't feel like it. In case you haven't noticed, you'll never feel like it.
So in order to become the person you dream of, and live the life you dream of, you have to push yourself to do things whether or not you feel like it.
Put another way, you will never, ever, ever, achieve the things you dream about if you only take action when you feel like it.
If that doesn't hit home, then I don't know what will.
No one is coming to save you, so stop waiting. Stop waiting for a person, and stop waiting for a feeling. If you want something, write it down, break it up into chunks - no matter how small - and commit to taking action!
If you only wait until you feel like it, you're going to have a hard life, and you'll deprive the world of the joy that you would've brought it, had you done the things you should've done to become that person you could've become.
I know this is harsh, but it's also comforting. With this knowledge, you can be prepared the next time you don't feel like doing something, to take action anyway. You can recognize: oh yea, this is that feeling that Gabe was talking about. I don't feel like doing something, but I know in my heart of hearts that I have a 0% chance of getting what I want if I give in, so I'm at least going to give myself a somewhat of a chance by taking action.
Commit to excellence, put your unpredictable feelings to the side, and do what you're meant to do so you can become what you're meant to become.
Live with substance!
